This portfolio charts my evolution as an oil painter. While I began in 2010, my practice was paused by the Christchurch earthquakes and a demanding corporate career in Wellington. Returning to Christchurch in 2020 allowed me to establish myself as a full-time artist for the first time. In those early years, I explored the versatility of oils, moving between the atmospheric depth of traditional landscapes and the clarity of hard-edged forms. The Evolution of Style My love for structure has always been a driving force. As you explore this collection, you will see works where I interpreted native birds through a distinct, architectural lens. This phase was crucial-it taught me how to break the natural world down into its essential elements. The Turning Point In 2025, a business certificate through Te Wananga o Aotearoa challenged me to define my unique artistic voice. This course was the catalyst to merge my interests, encouraging me to take the precision I loved and weave it into a new, organic narrative. Current Direction: The Woven Style My most recent work is the culmination of that journey. I have retained the definition of my earlier roots but now use it to weave the subject and background together. In this series, I am focusing specifically on the birds listed as 'In Serious Trouble' within the NZ Forest and Bird competition. These intricate patterns knit the bird tightly into its habitat, symbolising the truth that our wildlife cannot exist without the land. Originals are for sale, and they are also available as prints. Please contact me if interested. A portion of the proceeds of each sale are donated to NZ conservation efforts.
