Donna Howes - Artist Bio
Hi, I'm Donna Howes. At heart, I've always been creative. Growing up, I taught myself calligraphy, card making, quilling, sign writing, and photography, and I even dreamt of becoming an architect. Although life eventually took me on a detour into a corporate career in the public service, that childhood spark never truly faded.
In 2020, moving back to my hometown of Christchurch became the catalyst for a major life change. I traded the office for a home studio and committed to art full-time, seeking a life with meaning, connection, and colour.
Now, working from my Christchurch studio, I explore the vital relationship between Aotearoa's native wildlife and their habitat. My philosophy is simple: our wildlife is inseparable from the land. You can see how this concept has evolved into my signature woven style in my Oil Paintings portfolio.
I am currently focused on painting all birds listed as 'In Serious Trouble' in the Bird of the Year campaign. For me, art is not just about capturing beauty; it is an act of advocacy. A portion of all proceeds from my work supports conservation efforts, ensuring that the taonga (treasures) I paint are protected for future generations.
